Meet our resident ambassadors
Pale chanting goshawk
Pale Chanting Goshawks are striking raptors found across open savannah and semi-arid regions of southern Africa. They are highly effective hunters, feeding on insects, small mammals, and reptiles, and play an important role in controlling these prey populations naturally. These raptors are known for their distinctive pale plumage and melodious calls, often seen perched on roadside posts or low shrubs, scanning for prey. They nest in trees or shrubs and are highly territorial during the breeding season.

OUR RESIDENT PALE CHANTING GOSHAWK
NIMBUS OUR PALE CHANTING GOSHAWK
Nimbus, a Pale Chanting Goshawk, was sent to our centre from a farm in Montagu as a juvenile. When a concerned member of the public became aware of his situation, Melissa Whitecross quickly stepped in to ensure he could be safely transported to us for proper care.
By the time Nimbus arrived, his wing injury had gone untreated for some time, causing the elbow joint to partially fuse. This permanent damage means he is flightless and cannot survive in the wild. His story is a reminder of how crucial it is for injured wildlife to reach a registered rehabilitation facility as soon as possible — timely care can make all the difference in a successful recovery and release.
A STRIKING TRANSFORMATION
While Nimbus can no longer return to the wild, he has become an important ambassador for his species. He arrived two years ago in brown, streaked juvenile plumage and has since moulted into his bold adult colours, vividly illustrating the striking difference between juvenile and adult raptors. Through our educational programmes, Nimbus helps visitors connect with wildlife, fostering awareness, empathy, and prompt action to help animals in need.

Threats to Pale chanting goshawks!
Pale Chanting Goshawks are known for their distinctive hunting style called “perch-and-pounce.” They often sit quietly on a low perch, scanning the ground for prey such as insects, lizards, or small mammals. Once they spot a target, they swoop down with remarkable precision. What makes them particularly fascinating is that they sometimes hunt cooperatively, a mated pair may flush out prey together, increasing their hunting success. Despite their adaptability, Pale Chanting Goshawks face growing risks from human activity. Vehicle collisions, loss of suitable nesting sites, and habitat disturbance can all impact their survival. Protecting open spaces, maintaining safe perches, and reducing human disturbances are essential to ensure these adaptable raptors continue to thrive in the wild.
