Spotted eagle owls
Spotted eagle owls are the most common owl species in southern Africa, with healthy populations across much of the region. They adapt well to living in urban environments and are frequently found close to human habitation. They are among the most commonly admitted raptors at our centre, with many successfully rehabilitated and released over the years. Currently, we have nine Spotted eagle owls in permanent care. While their overall population remains stable, we are increasingly concerned by the rising number of poisoned owls admitted each year.
You can help protect owls by using owl-friendly pest control solutions, get in touch for more info or visit our shop.
Sponsor a bird today!
Help care for our resident birds with an annual sponsorship. Your support covers their feeding, and in return, you get unlimited visits, our newsletter, and recognition online as well as on our sponsor boards at the centre.
OUR RESIDENT SPOTTED EAGLE OWLS
Our surrogate owl parents
We are incredibly fortunate to have Mom, our resident Spotted eagle owl, who has been part of the centre for 12 years and is proudly sponsored by Lakes Bird Club She plays a vital role as our primary caregiver, acting as a surrogate parent to orphaned Spotted eagle owls in our care.
Alongside Mom, Romeo and Juliet have also taken on an adoptive parenting role, working together as a team. This surrogate care is essential in preventing human imprinting and gives young owls the best possible chance of survival in the wild. Romeo is kindly sponsored by Beth Hackland, and Juliet by BirdLife Plettenberg Bay
Spotted eagle owls are exceptional parents and will defend their young if threatened, but they pose no risk to people or pets. When allowed to breed naturally, they are also highly beneficial, helping to keep local rodent populations in check.
Help support owls in your area, consider purchasing an owl box to provide safe nesting sites and encourage natural breeding.
